Aston Villa's Europa Conference League Journey Ends in Heartbreak
Shock Defeat to Olympiakos Stuns Villains
Aston Villa's hopes of reaching their first European final in 42 years were dashed on Thursday evening as they succumbed to a shock 4-2 defeat to Greek side Olympiakos in the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final at the Karaiskakis Stadium.
Despite dominating possession for much of the match, Villa struggled to create clear-cut chances and found themselves punished by a clinical Olympiakos side who took their opportunities with ruthless efficiency. The visitors' misery was compounded in the second half when they conceded a late penalty, allowing Olympiakos to take a commanding 5-2 aggregate lead heading into the second leg.
The result leaves Villa with a mountain to climb in the return fixture at Villa Park next week, with the odds stacked heavily against them. Ayoub El Kaabi's brace for Olympiakos, coupled with a first-leg own goal from Tyrone Mings, has put the Greek side in pole position to reach the final.
Villa manager Steven Gerrard will be left to rue his team's profligacy in front of goal, with Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings both missing gilt-edged chances that could have changed the complexion of the tie. The Villans will now need to produce a Herculean effort in the second leg if they are to overturn the deficit and keep their European dream alive.
